Question 1 is about the following story.

It was a hot, humid July day. My sister and I thought swimming would be a good way to cool off. Seagulls floated along the breeze, occasionally squawking and fighting over a morsel of food.

We reached the beach and took our shoes off. The sand was warm and felt good in between my toes. I paused for a moment and wiggled my feet until they were covered. Even though the sand on top was hot, the sand underneath felt cool and comfortable. My sister and I both lay down to enjoy the sun. After a brief nap, I decided it was a good time to go swimming. "Be careful, Jimmy. Don't go too far out,'' said my sister. "I won't,'' I promised. Then I ran down the beach to join the other kids already playing in the surf.

We swam and splashed in the water for a long time. The water was the perfect temperature for swimming. Afterwards, one of the boys invited my sister and me to come over and eat hot dogs and hamburgers with his family.

The hot dogs were excellent and I was having a lot of fun talking to my new friend. All of a sudden, I heard a loud sound above me, and my friend's dad shouted, "Look out!" A ball of feathers hit me and wrenched my hot dog from my hand.

A seagull had spotted my food and swooped down to claim it for its own. After it took the hot dog from my hand, a battle started. All of the other seagulls attacked the thief and he only ended up with a tiny piece of bread for his efforts. I laughed because I wasn't hurt. I got another hot dog, which I ate quickly and kept well-guarded.
