Question 1 is about the following school newspaper article.

Last week, an elephant was found in the halls of Lakeside Elementary School. This large animal probably came to the school after it escaped from the zoo.

One student believes that the elephant followed her back to school from a field trip her class took to the Lakeside Zoo two weeks ago. In an interview she said, "I felt like I really bonded with an elephant at the zoo. I fed it lots of peanuts and candy. Right before we left, I looked in its eyes, and I knew that it would try to follow me."

No one is sure that this is the same elephant that was seen that day, but the fact that the elephant came to Lakeside, of all places, has led many to believe the story.

The elephant was last seen using its trunk to drink water from the water fountain. It also made loud noises in the halls that sounded like the school bell ringing. Principal Rodriguez and many teachers are confused and unhappy with this situation. They do not know how to get this elephant to leave the school.

Lakeside Elementary School students very much like having an elephant around. Many students have offered to take care of the elephant and it has been given the name "Lola." A petition will probably be passed around, asking that students sign if they want to keep Lola here instead of at the zoo.

Questions 3 is about the following passage.

Oak trees are known for being very strong and are often seen as symbols of might and stability. There are six hundred different types of oak trees that can be found all over the northern parts of the world. Because of this, many countries have chosen the oak tree as their national tree. Germany, England, and France are just three of the countries that have chosen this tree to represent their country.

The oak tree is also special in many ancient myths and stories. A story originating from the Norse people has the oak tree as a part of Thor's legend. Thor is the Norse god of thunder and he may have been connected with the oak tree because it is often struck by lightning.

In the Bible, the oak tree is mentioned several times. At one point, Jacob puts the statues of false gods underneath an oak tree. In Celtic stories, the oak tree represents doors or gateways. The Celts believed that you could find a way to move from our world to another at an oak tree. Oak trees were important and sacred openings, not found anywhere else. The oak tree is also found in Baltic and Slavonic stories.

Questions 4 is about the following passage.

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in America. It spans the Golden Gate, which is where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that stretches for 1.7 miles. When it was completed in 1937, it was the biggest suspension bridge in the world.

The Golden Gate Bridge was built because the northern side of San Francisco could only be reached by boat. This prevented the city from growing quickly, as imports from the North came in slowly.

People had thought about building a bridge like this for a long time, but it wasn't until a young engineering student proposed a relatively inexpensive idea that the idea for a bridge was taken seriously.

Joseph Strauss responded to an article that said a bridge would cost 100 million dollars to build, which was very expensive for that time. Strauss came up with a new idea that would only cost 17 million dollars. Strauss's idea changed over time. His original idea wasn't for a suspension bridge. In the end, the Golden Gate Bridge cost more than 35 million dollars.

The bright orange-red color of the bridge was originally just a temporary paint, but people liked it. The bridge has stayed this color ever since and is now an international symbol of the city of San Francisco.
